Mentoring Program Outline

​Are you a new grad physiotherapist with a passion for working with children? This 6–10 session mentoring program has been designed to help you build clinical confidence, strengthen foundational paediatric knowledge, and develop practical skills — all while feeling supported, encouraged, and inspired.

This is a structured, yet flexible mentoring series tailored for new graduates stepping into the world of paediatric physiotherapy. Whether you're in a hospital, community, private practice, or NDIS space — this program will help you feel more prepared, connected, and aligned with best practices in paediatrics.

Recommended (6-10 session program)

Initial Meeting

  • Discuss current caseload 

  • Discuss current support needs

  • Discuss goals for mentoring program

Session 2 

  • Understanding developmental vs. acquired conditions

  • Navigating the NDIS & funding pathways

  • The role of the paediatric physio (across settings)

  • Reflective practice & goal setting for the mentorship

Session 3 

  • History taking with families & child-centered interviewing

  • Standardised vs. non-standardised assessments

  • Using the WHO-ICF to guide clinical reasoning

  • Documentation tips for paediatrics

Session 4

  • Developmental milestones and red flags

  • Play-based therapy & engaging toddlers

  • Working in natural environments and with families

  • Early years goal setting

Session 5

  • Functional goals in home, school, and community settings

  • Coordination, motor planning, and participation

  • Building fun, functional therapy plans

  • Collaborating with educators and OTs

Session 6

  • Supporting children with ASD, ADHD, and sensory profiles

  • Strengths-based and neurodiversity-affirming practice

  • Co-regulation, routines, and behaviour support

  • Working in interdisciplinary teams

Session 7

  • When and how to recommend equipment

  • Working with suppliers, AT applications, and trials

  • Writing therapy and AT reports

Sessions 8-10

Optional Sessions (choose based on your goals):

  • Hydrotherapy and play-based aquatic skills

  • Telehealth & rural/remote service delivery

  • Case presentations and supervision-style problem solving

  • Reflective practice, burnout prevention, and self-care

  • Transitioning to independent clinical decision-making
